Mizare Hospitality insists on conforming precisely to the Uniform System of Accounts as prescribed by the Hotel Association of New York City. Why? Owners and too many asset managers consistently ask us why are we so dogmatic about this issue. The answer is easy: Because it takes all the debate away. Hundreds of highly qualified people around the world have contributed to the creation and constant revision of this important guide. People with, collectively, tens of thousands of years of experience in every possible type of hotel have reached agreement that this guide is the best way to account and to measure what we do. How we run hotels. How we do things like: record no show revenue versus attrition and cancellation revenue (One of my favourites). So, with allowances for Canadian financial reporting requirements, it is how we report the financials for all our hotels. The prescribed answers might not suit an owner, an asset manager, a hotel manager and far too often an external auditor but if you are all clear going in that these are the rules then there will be little time wasted arguing and all involved can focus on making the business successful. And that is why we are all there. To actually improve the performance of the asset not to use numeric sleight of hand to give the appearance of improved performance. Such consistency also allows for real benchmarking against similar assets and a consistent framework to monitor competitive performance and we should all welcome such scrutiny, it can help make us better at what we do. Yet time and again we walk into buildings and look at the financial statements, look at each and shake our heads. It is going be another long journey to reach anything resembling a normalized, useful and meaningful financial statement. But it is a journey we are firmly committed to completing.

Port Hardy, BC, Canada
After a traditional welcome by Chief George Hunt of the Kwakiutl Nation the Gwa’sala ‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations and K’awat’si Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) unveiled the Designs and floor plans of the soon to be Kwa’lilas Hotel to over 100 Port Hardy Community Members last week.
“Kwa’lilas” is the traditional word that refers to a place to sleep. The hotel was named by the Gwa'sala 'Nakwaxda'xw elders in hopes that travelers and guests would find peaceful rest in the area after a day of exploration in the north island.
It was important for the Gwa'sala 'Nakwaxda'xw Nations not only to work on a project that celebrates their history and culture, but also to understand that a project of this magnitude will create a legacy that will be a part of the rejuvenation of Vancouver Island North, attracting new visitors, businesses and services into the region.
This is the first step in the evolution of the former Port Hardy Inn, moving towards a building that is community-purchased, renovated and operated. The K’awat’si Economic Development General Partner Corporation LP (KEDC), the economic development arm of the Gwa’sala ‘Nakwaxda’xw, bought the property earlier this year and is excited about creating a hotel experience that will reflect the Gwa’sala ‘Nakwaxda’xw people’s history, culture and passion for their territory, that will result in local jobs and tourism interest that will drive economic growth to revitalize the region.
The team of architects, designers and artists on the hotel project is led by Scott Roberts of Mizare Hospitality with the help of Malcolm McSporran of Quinkatla Development Planning Inc., Tohmm Cobban of Tohmm Cobban Architect, Judy Henderson of Inside Design Studios and Shain Jackson of Spirit Works Ltd, who will manage local and regional aboriginal artists creating pieces to give the hotel its unique look and feel.
Key milestones to the project include:
In the fall of 2015, the Kwa’lilas Hotel unveiled its renovation plans to the community. The Kwa’lilas Hotel will complete final stages of structural exterior of building and architectural design, functionality and designs of interior building including guest rooms, corridors and lobby area and commence demolition.
By early 2016, all artisans will be selected and the concepts for artwork will be finalized.
There will be a temporary closure of the hotel between November 2015 and May 2015. The pub and restaurant will remain open during refurbishment of the building with minimal construction inconvenience to patrons.
The Kwa’lilas Hotel is looking forward to opening in late spring of 2016.
I came across this list recently in the course of my near daily attempts to read things that remind us to aspire to an ever greater sense of understanding of who we are before we can guide others find their way to their success.
If you and I have worked closely you will know I have a strong attachment to the Servant Leadership model as the basis for a healthy culture in an organization. It has been said that the ultimate Servant Leader was JC so I found it more than interesting that another great role model for Leadership, Ghandi, espoused many of the same values.
Perhaps Ghandi is a little more relevant in a secular, business world but I can assure you IF you lead your company with these values at the core of your culture you will build a team of people who will lead you to remarkable success.
Gandhi’s Seven Social Sins +1
Wealth without Work
Pleasure without Conscience
Knowledge without Character
Commerce without Morality
Science without Humanity
Worship without Sacrifice
Politics without Principle
Rights without Responsibilities*

And these are not thoughts and opinions that you can keep to yourself. Core to being a great leader is knowing yourself well enough to be able to trust that fully exposed you will inspire. Sharing this kind of list with the absolute confidence that it is how you want to live will only serve to inspire those around you.
May I assume you want the people you have surrounded yourself with to be inspired?

Social media is often misconstrued as an over simplification of the much larger brand image of online presence. Often when we hear the term social media we think of our Facebook, our Twitter, and the litany of other tools used to communicate with people. This is where the problem begins; a company concentrates on social media when they are B2C, while often missing the fact that B2B transaction are, after all the faceless paperwork, people doing business with people.
A complete online presence is not just a place for the customers to get know you, but a place for you to show other potential business partners your culture, ideals, and successes.
Recently we have seen a shift from the word of mouth we know, the one passed on in connections from the real world (IRL) to those connections, comments, feedback given within cyberspace, which may not be something you can touch, feel and hear, but something you can most certainly see and read.
So the question comes full circle. If you're not working on your online presence for B2B growth, what exactly are you doing to further your brand's image?
